On Thursday 24th February, Robert from Hand In Hand Activities CIC’s Cycling Without Age Stockton on Tees Chapter had a meeting with the Activities Coordinator for Stockton Lodge Care Home, Michelle, to introduce her to Trixie Trishaw and discuss working with the staff at Stockton Lodge to take the residents on rides around the local community.

After talking to Michelle, we offered to take her and a resident for a ride around the local area as this is the best way to experience the ‘Wind in Your Hair’. Michelle had already identified a gentleman from the care home who would love to have a ride as he had enjoyed cycling in his youth.

Harold, our oldest passenger to-date aged a spritely 96 years young, joined Michelle onboard Trixie and we managed to grab a few photographs. Checking everyone was comfortable, we set off for a ride round the local estate.  Talk about experiencing the wind in the hair – Harolds hat blew off while we were travelling along the road! We quickly stoped to recover the hat and caused a traffic jam in the process. Thankfully, car drivers were understanding when they realised why we had stopped. After that, Harold kept a tight hold of his hat!

On our return to Stockton Lodge, Harold asked if he could try out the saddle for size and so he could get the feel of a bike again. He told us about all of the miles he rode when he was younger and some of the places he had been on his bicycle, he also shared keen to get back out on Trixie as soon as possible. The question is will he be in the pilot seat or the passenger seat?

We are looking forward to working with Michelle, the team and the residents at Stockton Lodge Care Home in the future, allowing more residents to feel the wind in the hair!
